Architectural Office Michael Dillon

AOMD was established by Michael Dillon in 2022. The practice is founded on a cross-sector speciality in contemporary timber construction.

Prior to setting up AOMD, Michael worked for ten years at Mæ architects. His last completed building, Sands End Arts and Community Centre, was shortlisted for the 2022 RIBA Stirling Prize. It was voted London’s Building of the Year by the Royal Institute of British Architects alongside winning a RIBA national award.

AOMD practice from our studios in the rural landscape of the Weald and in Tunbridge Wells. We work on projects of all scales, from furniture, crafted interiors, new build homes to public and cultural buildings, consultation and community masterplans.

We offer our varied clients a personalised and hands-on experience.  We talk openly about the design and construction process, working through workshops and co-design exercises, we address cost and construction programming from the outset.

On all projects we use large-scale physical models and hand drawings to walk clients through the emerging designs to make spaces tactile and recognisable.

Our values

To use context and landscape as a driving force behind our architecture

To be rigorously sustainable, to work with a simple, tactile and natural material palette and to specify only low-carbon materials

To utilise our creativity and curiosity to repeatedly challenge the construction industry, our clients and our personal assumptions

To design buildings that last, with the flexibility to change with the client and their environment

The practice is supported by teaching and research. We teach at postgraduate level at the University of Cambridge and London Metropolitan University, Michael is a specialist design panellist for Design South East and is an examiner for the Architects Registration Board.
