Blythe Hill Yards, London

Located on the site of a detached Victorian worker's cottage, the project aims to transform the existing linear sequence of rooms facing the side access passage into a series of more defined spaces. These new additions include a front bay window, a side yard, and a timber-clad garden room.

Preserving the cottage's character was a priority for the owners, the proposed design amplifies the Victorian cottage spirit while reconfiguring the interior layout. Our proposal adds a Douglas fir framed and clad extension, which functions as an auxiliary garden room. Despite being lightweight in its choice of materials, the garden room pays homage to the cottage's existing gable elevation through its form. A large protruding, high-level window opens a view to the site's mature cherry tree and low level windows to the dining room allow the garden to run into the interior.
