Kissing Gables, Tunbridge Wells

Set in a village on the outskirts of Tunbridge Wells, this back land site is located within an area characterized by mixed-quality, mid-20th century development, featuring hipped and cat slide roofs, projecting dormers, and references to a historical Kentish vernacular.

'Kissing gables' draws inspiration from a medieval house in the village with touching tiled gables at right angles. The two building wings are oriented around existing trees and ornamental bushes, at their meeting point creating a natural entrance and verdant front garden featuring new Silver and Downy birches.

The interior consists of rooms overlapping at corners, offering both privacy and flow from one to the next. A double height dining and family room gives view of the large, steeply sloping roof and features low-level glazing to a garden terrace. To the rear, the proposal forms an L-shaped enclosure of large cat slide roofs, with recessed entrances and subtle arches referencing Arts and Crafts designs such as CFA Voysey's The Homestead.
