Willow Housing, York

Sited within the city walls of South Walmgate in York, the project was part of an invited competition in collaboration with Mae architects. The aim was to design 40 new homes, a community centre, and public realm. The architectural design paid homage to York’s medieval tapestry, incorporating pitched roofs and expressive gables. The streets feature pinch points and folds, echoing the undulating jettied passages in the historical centre.

In terms of layout, the block consists of double-stacked houses, with larger family houses situated on each gable end, giving the gables more articulation than a simple block type would suggest. At the easternmost corner, the block houses a new community centre, which faces the public park and the southernmost gate to the city.
